Here's a Spidey I did 'cause my 3 year old asked me to. I can't throw stuff away. There is all kind of junk in my place to paint on. This was painted on red oak nubs leftover from when I built shelves for spices. It measure 2 1/4" x 3".

I only have, like, 10 cutting boards left. I like the weight and feel of the finished work. I'm as concerned with the presentation as the image itself. I bought a bunch of cutting boards and have been working through them slowly. This one might be the first in a series. I think I'm a folk artist(?)!

The 30 drawings in 30 days challenge is not
going as well as I had hoped. I figured I would sit down an draw and every session would result in a drawing. This is not how it is playing out. I am drawing everyday though and that is great.

This is gonna be a fun show. A bunch of us donated work to help a friend and fellow artist get his tooth fixed. The show is called "Root Canal". All of the members of Local 303 have donated work, even though I didn't make the flier. Our good friend Leef has donated the gallery at his shop, Mission: Comics & Art, and there is a reception on Thursday, 4-7-11, starting at 7:00 pm.

For the month of April, I have decided to complete a drawing a day for the entire month. I think it's more about discipline than the quality or complexity of the drawing itself. Discipline is my greatest weakness. I feel I need improve and a challenge on public record seemed like a good way to wage war on one weakness with another, pride. Just joshing, sort of. This was a painting based on a drawing I did at our annual "Not Camping Trip". His name is Ed. I have no name for the duck. The exercise was to limit my palette. Working in Illustrator, I've gotten lazy. Illustrator allows you to add a different color whenever you want. I tend to let this freedom complicate my images. By limiting color I hope to learn a cleaner and more economical design style I can apply to t-shirt design. That's where the money's at!

I am really excited that I finally busted out the brushes and got paint on them. I did a series of pigs playing instruments. I had the paint. I had the wood. Now I have 3 paintings. I will be making prints that will be available in the Etsy shop shortly.

303 to close in April

Not much in the way of art to report. We did get the news that we are moving out of the studio at the end of April. It has been a real good time being a part of the Local 303. There is already someone lined up to move in, so no need to try and contact me or the other guys to get the spot. There will be one more Open Studio party and I think it will be a blowout so keep an eye out for that. Thanks to everyone who came by over the years and I will let you know if there will be any future 303 activity. My work will still be available at Artist Xchange and from my Etsy store.

Me and fellow 303 artist Matt Delight started a blog and podcast. "Fat and Skinny Go to the Movies" will be our outlet for talking about movies. Both of us are die hard movie nuts and thought it could be a lot of fun, and we were right. The first episode is already up on the blog and on iTunes.

One of three different tikis I carved myself, available for purchase at Open Studios this weekend. I also have new stickers and prints. Hopefully the highly anticipated "C is for Coloring" coloring book will be on sale too. Featuring 16 original Jason Dryg images left colorless so you can customize them to your personal taste. I've still got t-shirts, baby clothes, cards, buttons, and googly-eyed owl pins. There will also be some new prints available. If you can't make it, the Alternative Press Expo is next weekend, October 17- 18th. It will be held at the Concourse Expo Center, 620 7th street. As always, there is tons of great stuff there to look at and buy. We will be there hawking our stuff as well.

Great Weekend

APE was really great. Two whole days surrounded by art and artists. First time doing a show not in my studio and we "made table" (covered the cost of the table) on day one. We did spend some of our profits on art and comics though. We had great neighbors and a bunch of friends stopped by. I was so nervous about it being the wrong kind of show for me, but by the end I didn't care. I had too much fun. It's a really great atmosphere to hang out in. I'll do it again if they'll have me back. If you didn't make it out, don't forget I'll be at Artist Xchange this Friday, see last post for details. I don't have any shows planned until Spring. You can finally buy my stuff online at Crittershop. Crittershop is my personal online store hosted by Etsy, an online community of artists and crafts people. APE Nov 1-2
I will be hocking my wares at APE (Alternative Press Expo) this weekend. I recommend it as a great way to spend the day if you're into independently produced books, art, toys, and stuff. There will be celebs from the indie comics scene (Chris Ware!) taking part in discussion panels. Some of my favorite artists are usually there signing their books. I always spend too much money. Local 303 founder, Josh Ellingson has a table. Come on by and say hi. I am booth 258. For more info check out the APE site.

Artist-Xchange Through November
The nice folks down at Artist-Xchange have given me some wall space through November. There will be a reception on Friday the 7th, 7-10pm. There are a lot of really good artists there. And there are so many great resturants near by you can have a nice night out. I'm just sayin'. The Artist-Xchange is located on 16th between Valencia and Guererro.

Fall Open Studios 2008

I really want to thank everyone who came out to the 303 this weekend. I figured with the election and market the way it is, people weren't going to be thinking about art, let alone buying it. It just goes to show how great of an art town SF is. Great party Friday! Thanks to SOMA FM's very own Megan for tending bar and everyone who tipped her. Thanks to Josh, Matt, and Dave for making the 303 a great place hang out. Most of all thank you Jennifer (my wife) for keeping on top me to actually have things ready for the weekend and for hanging in there while I got ready. I also need to thank Arcadia Custom Framing in San Francisco, so good to me, and the best framers in SF, maybe the world.
My son Dexter had a great time. He smiled the whole time. The whole baby mob was there. Sydney, Lucy, Max, and Wiley all stopped by. We had a special visit from the Drunk Lady that left by way of Ambulance last spring. She was escorted out before she could get a drink and able to leave under her own power. I hope she is OK. Elise from SOMA FM interviewed singer/song writer Django James on Saturday so he hung out. I wish I would've spoken to him. Come back any time. Anyway, I had a great time.
